TANQUERAY® has been a world class gin for over 175 years. Established by Charles Tanqueray in 1830 the timeless recipe remains unchanged to this day. TANQUERAY gin started in a small distillery in Bloomsbury, London, and its reputation spread around the globe becoming the drink of choice for many including the Rat Pack and the White House.
1830 Charles Tanqueray, (1810-1868), son of a Bedfordshire clergyman, sets up The Bloomsbury distillery in Finsbury, London. Experimenting over the years with many possible ingredients, Charles Tanqueray finally produced the key balance of ingredients and TANQUERAY® gin was launched. He used an innovative method of production using a fourth distillation to create a purer, smoother gin – the recipe and process is still used today
1838 The TANQUERAY® crest featuring a pineapple and two battle axes was granted to the Reverend Edward Tanqueray. The crest is used on TANQUERAY bottle tops.
1839 Charles Tanqueray develops a ‘spiced’ gin called ‘Malacca’
1847 TANQUERAY® gin was making inroads among the spice planters and traders of far-away Jamaica. Evidence comes from the recovery of a tall ceramic crock discovered in a shipwreck in Kingston, Jamaica, bearing the legend ‘Tanqueray Gin’
1868 Charles Tanqueray died and his son, Charles Waugh Tanqueray took over the business at the age of 20

1922 Tanqueray Gordon & Co join The Distillers Company
1941 Goswell Road was bombed by the Luftwaffe on the night of 11 May. The firm’s offices, warehouses and the distillery were destroyed. One copper still called ‘Old Tom’ survived and is still used in TANQUERAY® production today
1951 TANQUERAY® began to be produced in the now familiar iconic green bottle
1950′s/60′s TANQUERAY® allegedly becomes the drink of choice for the rat pack. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior and Bob Hope, were seen drinking TANQUERAY. In 1962 the brand sold 25, 674 cases in the USA, this jumped to 47, 000 the following year, without spending a penny on either advertising or promoting the brand
1979 One million cases of TANQUERAY® gin sold worldwide
1984 Production of TANQUERAY® moved to the Laindon site, Basildon, Essex to meet the increased demand for the brand. The first gin distillation using the traditional copper stills, including ‘Old Tom’, which was over 200 years old, was successfully achieved in 1989
